Problem Statement
The design of the original app follows the IOS guidelines and won’t be compatible with Android. In order to make the app available on Android, we would have to replace the current components with those that are platform agnostic for IOS and Android.
Project Overview
Our emotional and behavioral tracker app initially launched exclusively on iOS, but with growing demand from Android users, we've set out to expand its reach. Over the past four months, our team has been working on building a seamless cross-platform experience for both iOS and Android. To achieve this, we opted for React Native, allowing us to streamline development while maintaining a native look and feel on both platforms. This meant revisiting and refining our original designs to ensure they resonate with users, no matter which device they use.
Discover
We began by understanding the core problem and finding efficient ways to adapt the app for both iOS and Android. With valuable documentation from the initial build, I gained insights into the app's purpose and design rationale, ensuring that updates aligned with the original vision while improving cross-platform functionality. During my review, I identified key areas for enhancing the user experience and refined the design. This also allowed me to create clearer documentation for future designers, helping them understand the context and continue building smoothly. I also benchmarked the previous work against the Nielsen Norman 10 usability heuristics and key accessibility standards to ensure compliance with industry best practices, identifying additional areas for improvement to meet both usability and accessibility requirements.
Ideation
After reviewing the previous work and benchmarking it against industry best practices, I identified key areas for improvement that fit within the project's strict scope. This allowed me to refine and enhance existing components to meet both usability and accessibility standards, while staying true to the original design intent.

Enhancing the accessibility of the slider button was a top priority for me. On the left is the original design, and on the right is the improved version. By increasing the text size, positioning the number above the slider bar instead of inside it, and enlarging the buttons, the screen is now much more user-friendly and accessible.

I also dedicated this time to enhancing the user experience by ensuring that key information is prominently displayed on the screen for easy access.

Personalization was a request from the client, so I incorporated a feature that allows users to add their preferred name to their accounts. This enhancement elevates the user experience, making it feel more personal and engaging.
Deliver
While there were many more enhancements that could have improved the user experience, we were working against a tight deadline. After six weeks, we successfully delivered all the main objectives and shifted our focus to stretch goals. By the end of the 12-week timeline, we had a working application that functioned on both IOS and Android platforms, created new designs for non-agnostic elements, achieved a personalized experience, developed a new user walkthrough, made updates to usability and accessibility, and designed a dark mode option. As a plus, I was also able to explore the redesign of their app logo.
